Liz Smith
Liz Smith
Interviewed July 1996

Tell us about yourself!
My name is Liz Smith, I am married to Graham, I work at the Royal Northern College of Music Library and I play the euphonium. I have lived in Manchester for the last 6 years and consider it to be my home now, but I expect that I am considered to be a southern softie as I originally come from Hagley in north Worcestershire.

What's the story behind you becoming a Manchester Storm fan?
I'm not quite sure! We kept hearing about it on the radio and in the MEN and one day we just said "shall we go?" and we did at the beginning of December and have only missed one game since.

What's your favourite place to watch the matches in the Nynex Arena?
Behind the goal, Block 108 p13/14 to be exact.

How do away rinks that you've been to compare to the Nynex?
This is a bit of a daft question, but they are usually colder but with a great atmosphere.

What was your favourite player from last season?
Without a doubt Shawn Byram.

What do you think of Lightning Jack?
I think that Lightning Jack is naff and it is about time they spelt his name correctly in the programme, which incidently is always littered with spelling mistakes, not good considering the number of kids who read it.

Jon Hammond - the announcer?
I think that Jon Hammond is extremely good especially when compared to Dave Simms.

The band?
I think that the drums are excellent.

Drum Tart?
When you say Drum Tart, I assume you mean Mrs TomToms!

The ice-cream sellers?
That ice-cream seller is very sad!

What was your favourite game that you've seen so far?
Not sure, possibly the first Blackburn away game on 21st January or Cardiff.

What was the worst?
At home to Medway when there were 2 games one weekend.

Have you held up a sign? If so, what was on it?
Yes, WE ARE NO. 1". Unfortunately I was stood right next to a cardboard cutout of CHAMPIONS so only a quarter of my banner was ever on the screen.

Would you like to drive a Zamboni?
Definitely.

Have you ever ice skated before? Are you any good?
Yes, I skate regularly, as to my prowess you'll have to ask my personal coach - Janet Valentine!

What's your favourite tune that gets played at the Nynex in between the action?
The goal scoring one, of course!

Do you have a favourite fight that has happened in a match?
The Solihull game - I found Doyle's antics very amusing!

Anything else we should know?
Shawn Byram is the team's best (and sexiest) player by far, and I'm extremely glad that he has resigned as I have my shirt printed with his name!!!
