I knew nothing about ice hockey before I went to my first game. Storm fans are very good at explaining things (rules, strategy, etc) at the games, which is where I got most of my guidance from. It's certainly easier to watch live than to watch on Sky as you get a wider perspective and can watch the play being to build of the puck. Its not a difficult game rule-wise, but the referees are so inconsistent its often difficult to tell. The short of it is, ask the people around you at Nynex they'll be more than happy to explain what they know, and if you hang around Block 115 they'll tell you what they think as well!!! Enjoy the game.
