NOBLE MAKES A POINT
A dramatic late equaliser by Cardiff Devils' Kip Noble tonight prevented
Manchester Storm from boosting their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the
Express Cup.
Storm were leading 2-1 when Noble struck to send the game into overtime, and
no further goals meant the sides had to be content with a point.
Steve Thornton had given Cardiff the lead but Stefan Ketola equalised and
Hilton Ruggles put Storm ahead six minutes into the final period.
It means Storm stay sixth in the table with 10 points from 11 games. They need
to finish in the top four to continue their interest in the competition.
Devils are fourth with 13 points from 11 games, and the draw ended their run
of five successive league and cup wins.
At Basingstoke, Sheffield Steelers consolidated their place in the top four
with a comfortable 5-2 away win over the Bisons.
Steelers enjoyed the best possible start with a goal after just two minutes
from their leading scorer in the competition, Scott Allison. David Longstaff and
Tony Hand put them 3-0 up after 21 minutes.
In the final period, Tim Cranston and Ken Priestlay scored further goals for
Sheffield and Kevin Conway struck two consolation efforts for Bisons, who stay
second from bottom of the table.
Steelers stay second in the table alongside Nottingham Panthers, both two
points behind leaders Ayr Scottish Eagles.
